When the first cold snaps hit the Treasure Valley, the fireplace becomes the center of the house again. If yours is surrounded by builder-basic drywall or dated tile, a new tile surround is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make to a living room - and it's work our crew does alongside our flooring projects.
Full-Height vs. Surround-Only
Many newer homes in Meridian, Eagle, and Star have tall great rooms where a small fireplace surround can look lost on the wall. Running tile all the way to the ceiling gives the fireplace the presence the room calls for. In rooms with standard ceilings, a surround that frames the firebox and mantel area can be just as striking and keeps the project simpler.

Choosing the Tile
- Large-format porcelain tile - clean, modern, and fewer grout lines.
- Mosaic tile - texture and pattern that catches light from the fire.
- Stone-look or natural stone tile - a warm, rustic feel that suits a mountain-inspired room.
- Stacked or ledger-style tile - strong shadow lines for a dramatic look.
Tie It to the Floor
A fireplace wall and the floor in front of it are seen together, so it pays to choose them together. Warm wood tones in engineered hardwood or luxury vinyl plank pair well with gray or cream tile, while a darker floor can make a light, bright surround pop. If you're replacing the floor too, planning both at once avoids a clash.
What Goes Into the Install
A good tile surround starts behind the tile. The wall needs a sound, appropriate substrate, and materials near the firebox need to suit the heat of your specific unit - your fireplace manufacturer's clearances always come first. We take care with layout so cuts are balanced around the opening and the mantel, and so the pattern lines up cleanly from bottom to top.
