Why porcelain outperforms other tile

Porcelain is fired from a denser clay than standard ceramic, so it's less porous, harder, and rated for heavier traffic. Urban Edge Construction installs porcelain across The Treasure Valley homes and businesses - it's one of the materials Eddy relies on most after 10+ years installing floors in Idaho's dry, dusty climate.

Modern porcelain comes in wood-look planks, marble-look slabs, and textured options rated for entries and mudrooms. You get the look of natural [stone](/natural-stone-tile) or real [hardwood](/hardwood-flooring) without the upkeep either one demands.

Why porcelain outperforms other tile

Where porcelain is the right call

Porcelain is the safe choice for any high-use or wet space, and it won't fade even in a west-facing room that bakes in a Meridian summer.

  • Wood-look porcelain planks - the look of hardwood with none of the water risk
  • Large-format slabs - fewer grout lines, a cleaner open-concept feel
  • Marble and stone-look porcelain - the look of natural stone without the sealing schedule
  • Commercial spaces - durable enough for retail and office traffic

Installation done right

Large-format and plank-shaped porcelain is unforgiving of subfloor unevenness - even a small dip will telegraph through the finished floor. We laser-level, use leveling clips, and back-butter every piece for full mortar coverage.

We also use the right cutting tools - porcelain dulls a standard blade fast, so we run diamond blades rated for the material to get clean cuts at every outlet and corner. Homeowners across [Meridian](/flooring-meridian) and [Eagle](/flooring-eagle) have seen the difference in our finished work.

Porcelain Tile - frequently asked questions

Yes - porcelain is denser and harder. For floors, wet areas, and any high-traffic space, it's worth the small upgrade over standard ceramic.

Modern wood-look porcelain is remarkably realistic, especially in wider plank widths with a textured surface. Most guests can't tell until they get down close.

Porcelain itself is extremely hard, but it can crack if the subfloor flexes underneath it. That's why we use uncoupling membranes on plywood subfloors and large-format installs.

It depends on the finish. We steer bathrooms, entries, and mudrooms toward a matte or textured finish; polished porcelain is best kept to dry rooms.
