Today's AC4-rated laminate uses high-resolution printed wear layers and textured surfaces that read as real wood from across the room. Laminate is a solid choice for rental properties, busy family rooms, hallways, and kids' bedrooms - anywhere you want a wood look with a tougher surface. For rooms that see more moisture, we'll usually point you toward [LVP](/luxury-vinyl-plank) instead and explain why.
AC ratings - the spec that actually matters
The AC (Abrasion Class) rating tells you how the wear layer holds up. We don't install below AC4 in The Treasure Valley homes.
- AC4 - heavy residential and light commercial use; our default for most homes
- AC5 - heavy commercial grade; a good fit for entries, halls, and rental properties
- Water-resistant cores - worth the upgrade for kitchens and powder rooms
How we install laminate that doesn't squeak or peak
Laminate is a floating floor - skip flattening the subfloor or leaving proper expansion gaps and it will telegraph every flaw and peak at the seams. We level every floor before install, use quality underlayment, and leave the correct perimeter gap concealed by baseboard.

Laminate Flooring - frequently asked questions
No - laminate has a wood-fiber core with a printed wear layer, while vinyl plank has a plastic core and is fully waterproof. Laminate is slightly harder underfoot but more sensitive to standing water.
Water-resistant laminate can handle occasional kitchen spills, but for anywhere near a sink or dishwasher we'll usually recommend [LVP](/luxury-vinyl-plank) instead.
AC4 laminate typically lasts 15-20 years in residential use with normal care.
